The RAID Perspective

STANDARDS, SAFETY, AND PROFESSIONALISM

There has been significant chatter in the industry lately regarding dive standards, student-to-instructor ratios, and the effectiveness of industry watchdogs. While these topics are popular for debate, we believe they often miss the most important question: How do we best serve the needs of the modern diver?

Beyond the Brand Name

There is a common, though simplified, belief that the industry should rely on the individual instructor rather than the agency brand. While we agree that the instructor is the primary variable, this overlooks the agency’s role in setting and enforcing how high the bar sits.

Implementation is Key

For example, when we set a student/instructor ratio in standards, the proviso is that for that ratio to follow standards, conditions must be “ideal.” When circumstances are less than ideal- if there are currents, waves or a swell, less-than-perfect visibility, cool water temperature, and a handful of other factors- the ratio drops.

The agency sets the standard, and instructors and dive operators are expected to follow it: and do if properly trained.

At RAID, our philosophy is simple and has just three conditions:

  • Consistent Standards: We provide a rigorous framework for our instructors and dive centres.
  • Professional Interpretation: We hold our instructors to these standards through active oversight.
  • No Shortcuts: We believe that professional training—when done right—is the ultimate safety tool.

Evolving with the Modern Diver

The entry-level diver of 2026 is not the same as the diver of 1986. We recognize that both expectations and technology have shifted. Our commitment is to update our standards to reflect modern realities while maintaining the highest level of safety and competence.

Our Commitment

We will continue to:

  1. Update standards to keep pace with technology.
  1. Treat instructor training with the gravity and professional rigor it deserves.
  1. Empower our students to provide feedback through direct Quality Assurance.

Here’s a question for you if you’re a current dive pro, or if you are thinking about becoming one: Are you ready to join an agency that values professional, non-negotiable standards?
